The Italian Red Cross and the Villa Maraini Foundation started this service as a pilot project on 1st August 1994 with the intention of supporting and helping those who are unable to request for help directly to Villa Maraini or other structures.
It works in close collaboration with the “Unità Strada” (the street unit), the local and State Police Forces in case of overdose, withdrawal symptoms, or drug related crises involving drug users under temporary arrest or awaiting trial.
The Emergency Unit team consists of a medical doctor, a social worker (ex-drug user), and an Italian Red Cross volunteer.
This service provides:
- efficient pharmaceutical therapies, opiates (methadone) or antagonist substances
- assistance in cases of family crisis connected with drug addiction.
